What's your dream linux laptop?

Post by mrfhitz » Tue Jun 23, 2020 2:36 am

Do you run linux on a laptop? In your opinion what's the best laptop to run linux and why?

I am a mac user. I like that the computer is easy to carry around with good battery life.
I'm looking around for a good laptop to run linux. So I would love to know if you have any dream laptops.

Thinkpad x60..

...just kidding. My dream laptop is one of the modern Dell xpses or a modern Thinkpad.

I may get a ton of flak for this but my dream would be a macbook running linux. The quality of the screens, speakers, touch pad, chassis, and keyboard (I dare to defend the butterfly) are top notch!

Beyond dreams there are only a few real world options for good laptops that can run linux in my opinion. The new XPS 15 would be a choice of mine if Dell ever had any worth while combinations of hardware in stock. I want to believe in system76 however their use of clevo is is disturbing to me. Purism is going in a good direction especially with their new 14 inch coming out soon. Tuxedo computers have the same Clevo rebranding issues. The KDE slimbook looks nice and they use a ryzen processor. I know a lot of people will suggest thinkpads but I in good conscious cannot. The lenovo line is rugged and compatible but what throws it out the door for me is the absolutely incoherent port selection. They have like 5 different usb port standards on the same machine! Not to mention their use of a "ethernet breakout" port. What is that even supposed to be? Why not just put and ethernet jack there?

My award would probably go to the Slimbook 15, XPS 15, or more likely the purism 14 but I want to wait until that comes out and see some reviews.
