Second build, this time a Gigabyte X570

A hefty tax return this year left me with some spare cash, so I decided to build another computer (I have one downstairs and one upstairs) and this time, I wanted a bit more than what the MSI Tomahawk could provide so I bought a GIGABYTE X570 AORUS ELITE that gave me more connectors for things like ...

Re: Radeon Tools

I installed Radeon Tools on both of my recent builds and one of them actually helped me demonstrate that a new RX-580 card was bad.... It was swapped out by the seller and the new one works fine. It took me a while to figure out just how to get it working properly without using root.... I had to ins...

Re: What phones do you guys use?

I've been ecstatic about my One Plus One, but it's battery is getting pretty short lived (and every release since has been going up in price). I replaced it with an LG G6 that I was also very happy with except I thought it was a tad sluggish. As the charging port failed on it after 2 years, I ended ...

Re: Nvidia vs AMD graphics cards.

Well, after deciding to build using an AMD graphics card after all (I figured I might as well learn something), it turns out that it is as painless as Nvidia when using Manjaro. I just checked "use proprietary drivers" during the install and away it went. The only thing that threw me off is that on ...

Re: Rocket League drops Linux users, says it's not worth the effort.

I don't game, so this does not really affect me but, is it just me or is there something nonsensical in their announcement? In an announcement posted to Steam, Psyonix said, “As we continue to upgrade Rocket League with new technologies, it is no longer viable for us to maintain support for the macO...

Re: Best B450 Motherboard for linux

I was planning on an X570 board, but after thinking long and hard about it, I've decided to buy an MSI Tomahawk MAX B450 board and a cheapo Ryzen 5 3600x. I just don't need the horsepower anymore.... All the data pushing and number crunching has come to an end for me.... I just putter around on the ...

Re: What method/tools do you use to do backups?

I have used a variety of methods, but it's hard to beat a full backup with clonezilla. Once a month I just plug in a usb stick, boot to it and create an image of my drive. I then move that image to my NAS and I keep the last 3 images in a folder. No matter what happens, I can restore the image in a ...

Re: Nvidia vs AMD graphics cards.

After checking my current computers, I discovered I had a GTX 650 and a GT 720 so I think I'm long overdue an upgrade. I ended up going with an RX 870 card.... just for kicks. Yeah, I know it's old tech, but it should be way ahead of what I have and at least they've had time to get the drivers baked...

Re: Best B450 Motherboard for linux

That's odd.... Asus has been my preferred motherboard manufacturer for over a decade now, due to their recognition of "Other OS". MSI simply writes in all their motherboard documentations that Windows 10 is a requirement?!?! I like the looks of many of the MSI boards, but I've been shying away due t...

Re: Nvidia vs AMD graphics cards.

Thanks, so it looks like things are still the same. I'm of half a mind just to keep this Nvidia card in the new build as it does everything I need. I don't use Intel. They tried a "tied" selling scheme where if you wanted to purchase a computer with an Intel chip, you HAD to purchase a Microsoft OS....
